The Splendour of Worship

By Published August 12, 2021

The definition of worship is broad.

In a clear term, worship is to make obeisance in homage to royalty in order to express honor, devotion, or admiration with great extravagant, giving full allegiance, acknowledging and ascribing worth to someone or something. Ps. 100:1-5 It is an extreme act of love, a show of loyalty emanating from a voluntarily surrender to a Divine being, supernatural power, or object.

Worship forms the foundation of morality with the purpose of ascribing to the Lord the glory due to His name (Ps 29:2).

Interestingly, man does not really need to be told to worship. It is in his nature to do so. He will always worship something or someone and to some extent, we turn to resemble whatever we worship.

WHAT IS TRUE WORSHIP

True worship is the highest form of worship. It must be God-centered and led by God otherwise it will be out of obligation and completely vain. To maximize result in true worship, it must be in spirit and in truth (Jn 4:24), acknowledging God’s power and glory in complete obedience to His word. The tendency of worship in spirit and in truth is legalism while the reverse is lawless and merely lip-service.

WAYS TO WORSHIP

It all begins with motivation followed by manner, will, or mind (1 Cor.2:16) in form of Servanthood, Submission, and physical response which could be expressed in several ways:

  • To kneel to bless God as in the case of - Ps 72:12-15
  • To be clear, to boast, to be clamorously foolish (Halah). - 1 Chro. 16:14
  • To shout loudly, to command (Shabach). - Ps 47:1
  • To sing praises, singing out of spirit spontaneously. - Ps 22:3
  • Extending hands, acting out of thanksgiving for has or will be done. - Ps 50:23
  • To touch the strings to make music with instruments mostly rejoicing (Zamar). - Ps 100:1-4
  • To extend hands vigorously (Yadah). - 2 Chro. 20:21
